Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research
Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
University of Copenhagen
We are looking for a highly motivated and diligent postdoc for a 5 months’ position to commence as soon as possible.
About us
The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research (CBMR)’s vision is to strengthen interdisciplinary research that transforms our basic understanding of the mechanisms that underlie metabolic health and disease, and to accelerate this knowledge toward new prevention and treatment strategies. We were established in 2010 and in 2017, we moved into new laboratories, offices, and meeting rooms in the Maersk Tower www.maersktower.ku.dk.
CBMR has around 260 employees who work in an international, highly collaborative research environment across a range of biomedical disciplines. You can read more about us here: www.cbmr.ku.dk.
Our research
In the Treebak Group, we aim to define mechanisms linking cellular NAD+ to metabolic health. We want to understand the role of the NAD+ generating and consuming pathways for maintaining tissue function and adaptability in response to metabolic stress. We employ innovative preclinical models to manipulate NAD-related metabolites cell type-specifically and determine functional implications. We have developed several novel and unique experimental models and techniques related to in vivo animal research. Moreover, we apply unbiased omics approaches and analytical pipelines in collaboration with key national and international partners to identify responsible mediators and to determine genotype/phenotype interactions. We are highly motivated and self-driven with a passion for metabolic research. We are part of a strong interdisciplinary, supportive, and diverse environment at CBMR, and we believe that teamwork and engagement are key elements for scientific success. You can read more about the Treebak Group here: Molecular Metabolism in the Treebak Group – University of Copenhagen (ku.dk).
Your job
We aim to delineate the common molecular networks involved in the lifespan and health promoting effects of dietary restriction and its mimetics. We have designed a pipeline to determine biologically relevant pathways affected by these interventions. We will analyse the metabolome, transcriptome and miRNome of samples obtained from C. elegans, as well as adipose tissue and serum from mice, rats, and humans after dietary interventions. We will also perform metagenomics analyses of the microbiota of mice, rats, and humans since changes in the microbiome have been associated with the effects of dietary restriction. We will correlate these findings with lifespan and/or metabolic profiling using data integration to identify evolutionarily conserved pathways that are commonly affected. The relevant pathways will then be scrutinized using gain- or loss-of-function models in C. elegans, mice, and mammalian preadipocyte cell lines, providing new insights into how these dietary interventions affect health span in multiple organisms, including humans.
Profile
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist who can perform metagenomic, metabolomic, and transcriptomic data analyses, and integrate this information using relevant methods. The following competencies and experience are important:
Essential experience and skills:
- You have a PhD in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Molecular Biomedicine, or related sciences.
- You are highly experienced in the various omics-type data analyses as mentioned above.
- You are proficient in omics data integration methodologies.
- Proficient communication skills and ability to work in teams.
- Excellent English skills written and spoken.
- Solid programming skills in common data analysis or statistical computing languages (preferably in Python, R, or MATLAB).
- Fluent in widely used data-science packages such as NumPy, pandas, matplotlib, scikit-learn, etc.
- Experience in statistical methods and algorithms appropriate for big-data analysis and integration, e.g., multiple testing problem, batch correction, matrix factorization, etc.
The place of employment is at Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research, Maersk Tower, Panum Institute, University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in a dynamic and international research environment.
Terms of employment
