The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) opens a permanent full time position for an ocean remote sensing scientist to work with satellite surface temperature of the ocean (SST) and ice (IST) to support our remote sensing activities.

The position is in the “Satellites and Arctic” group within the Danish National Centre for Climate Research (NCKF) department at DMI.

DMI is a leading European developer and producer of remote sensing products, including SST and IST products for the Arctic Ocean and the North Sea/Baltic Sea region. We are conducting extensive validation programs using ship borne radiometers and sea ice installations in Greenland. In addition, we participate in the development of new satellite missions in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT). The satellite data-derived products are critical for understanding the effects of climate change and are important inputs to weather and ocean models as well as DMI’s ice service. Most of the work is carried out in projects financed through ESA, EUMETSAT, the EU’s Copernicus program and the NCKF project.

As our new colleague you will work in close collaboration with dedicated and highly qualified scientist colleagues in the NCKF department as well as from other institutions across Europe.

You will take the lead in improving the operational SST products, developing level 2 (L2) SST retrieval algorithms, developing climate time series, writing peer reviewed publications and representing DMI in new research projects and in international organizations.

Main working tasks

  • Act as project leader for SST and IST research projects and initiate new project applications.
  • Develop and maintain the operational SST and IST products within the Copernicus CMEMS and OSI-SAF projects.
  • Develop and improve L2 passive microwave (PMW) SST retrieval algorithms
  • Lead the development and analysis of climate data records of SST and IST for the high latitude regions.
  • Ensure an increased uptake of the satellite products in DMIs ocean and atmosphere models
  • Contribute to the international SST community through participation in international collaborations and contribute to new satellite missions.
  • Communicate the scientific results to the government and the public
  • Leading and contributing to scientific papers
Qualifications/Experience
  • PhD degree in geophysics, engineering or similar within the field of remote sensing
  • Experience with L2 PMW SST algorithm developments
  • Experience with L4 SST and IST generation on a high performance computer, and climate data record analysis
  • Experience with field work in the Arctic is an advantage
  • Advanced programming skills in e.g. Fortran, Python or Matlab.
  • Experience with Linux and operational applications
  • Good skills in oral and written English.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
About DMI and NCKF The position is in the Danish National Centre for Climate Research (NCKF), which is a department at DMI. NCKF aims to conduct critical climate research for the Kingdom of Denmark (Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands) and bring together climate knowledge to form the basis for green transition and climate adaptation. The activities include monitoring of the Arctic and assessment of observed and future climate change of the physical climate system, with a special focus on the Arctic, Greenland and on extreme weather and sea level around Denmark. Across the department, the research builds on both global and regional modelling as well as observations from remote sensing, in-situ measurements and field work.

NCKF employs approximately 55 staff members, the majority is climate researchers including PhD students, junior and senior scientists. The department also includes a smaller group of generalists, project managers and administrative staff, who work in close collaboration with colleagues in the DMI departments for e.g. Finance & Facility Management and Policy & Strategy. We have a strong international profile, which is also reflected in the many nationalities employed and in a combined English and Danish working language.

Employment Employment and salary will be according to the Danish Law and Agreements, depending on previous experience. It will be possible to apply for an addition to the basic salary. Employees, who are recruited from abroad, and who are able to meet certain conditions, have the opportunity to work in Denmark for a period of 60 months under a special 26 % tax rate without deduction, instead of working under the regular income taxation. DMI offers a flexible working week of 37 hours including a paid lunch break, and six weeks of paid vacation annually. It is an advantage to be able to speak Danish but it is not a requirement.

The employment area is Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Facilities and associated institutions.But your work place will be at DMI, Lyngbyvej 100, 2100 Copenhagen Ø, Denmark. Physical presence is expected at least on a weekly basis.
