Professor of Upper Secondary Science Education and Research Program Leader
Department of Science Education
Faculty of Science

University of Copenhagen

The Department of Science Education seeks a professor in upper secondary science education research and leader of our research program for upper secondary discipline-based education research. The position is open from 1 February 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter.

About the Department and the Research Program
The department consists of approx. 80 persons, including 27 permanent Faculty researchers, has since 2007 developed into one of the largest European research units in science education. We collaborate well with other Danish key stakeholders and organisations to develop Danish science education, including the 11 other departments at the Faculty of Science – Denmark's largest science research and education institution. Our researchers have wide international networks and partner in international collaborative research. It is a hallmark of our research to unite strong fundamental and applied research with high impact in society. We offer a vibrant interdisciplinary research environment and an attractive and friendly work environment. Approx. 40% of the permanent Faculty researchers are international. Denmark’s prestigious public foundations and large (by world standards) private foundations offers an exceptional funding landscape for science education research.

The department has launched a research program that coordinates and supports the work of our researchers across the department’s research groups and external stakeholders in their collaborative research agendas related to upper secondary school science and mathematics teaching. The vision of the program is to create Denmark's leading platform for discipline-based and practice-oriented education research, to strengthen and develop the training of teachers and student learning of science and mathematics in upper secondary school. The mission of the program is to bring together and make visible our existing research activities as well as establishing new research activities in this area – in close connection with other stakeholders at the Faculty of SCIENCE and the field of practice. A number of thematic research networks will be formed under the program. Each network will receive department funding to carry out events and to prepare future grant applications. The program leader will coordinate the overarching events of the program and support the research networks so they can work towards the mission of the program.

Further information on the Department is linked at http://www.science.ku.dk/english/about-the-faculty/organisation/. Inquiries about the position and the research program can be made to Head of Department Jan Alexis Nielsen at janielsen@ind.ku.dk and +45 35 32 03 61.

Expectations to the candidate
Applicants must be able to document an excellent track record of research publications, research funding, and impact within discipline-based education research in relation to one or more of the classical natural sciences at the upper secondary school level (i.e. discipline-based education research within biology, biotechnology, chemistry, geography, geology, physics, or physical education). Candidates must have a strong record of international research collaboration.

The successful candidate will serve as the leader of the Department’s new research program for discipline-based education research focusing on the upper secondary school level. Therefore, applicants must have strong academic leadership experiences – e.g., experiences with department management/administration, leading research teams, and organising academic committees.

We prefer applicants with a degree in a natural science within the Danish upper secondary school system – e.g. biology, biotechnology, chemistry, geography, geology, physics, physical education etc. Further, we prefer candidates with a research record spanning multiple educational levels (i.e., secondary and tertiary education), candidates who have experience with in-service training of university science teachers as well as with (in-service) pedagogical development of upper secondary school teachers.

Applicants are required to have university-level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon their own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen’s teacher training programme for assistant professors is required.

Duties and responsibilities
The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Conduct research, develop the field, perform assessment tasks, write grant applications, and undertake research management such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff.
  • Lead the research program in discipline-based science education in close collaboration with an administrative coordinator and the network coordinators engaged in the program.
  • Teach courses within the department – including teaching and supervision of teaching faculty at the Faculty of Science, student supervision, coordination and teaching of courses for students, and preparing and conducting exams. Teaching in professional development courses for upper secondary school teachers in the natural science disciplines will be expected.
  • Undertake tasks requested by the Department – including engaging with and participating in Department and Faculty governance structures.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, as well as their documented teaching qualifications. Managerial and out-reach qualifications of applicants including ability to attract external funding will also be considered.

Six overall criteria apply for professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for an overall assessment of the candidates. Furthermore, each candidate must be assessed according to the specific requirements stated in the job advertisement.
